Winter fun!

For the past few years, we've had crappy winters. And by crappy, I really mean crappy. Grey, cold, wet, dark, long, with hardly any snow. And if there was any snow, it was here usually for two-three days before melting completely. Not really what winters should look like. Though it had some positive sides, too. Fewer problems during everyday commute to start with. But the child in me misses snow. Winter should be white. Period.

Ten years ago today our Finnish adventure started. We met a lot of amazing people, had the most snowy winter, got to see St. Petersburg and Tsarskoye Selo, got to visit Santa's village on the Arctic Circle and many more. It was a wonderful time. And so many things have happened since then. I'm not even going to try and name them. Too many.

Las weekend was a long weekend here in Poland. First one this year. And white! It was snowing whole Thursday. So Friday, Saturday and Sunday were all about snow. We spent a lot of time outside, seizing the opportunity to play in the snow to the maximum.

It was still snowing on Friday. But we started the day with a walk to the nearby forest, where we have hills perfect for sledging. We also had a snow fight, of course. Cause what's a winter without a good snow fight. In the afternoon, it was time to hit the garden again (again, cause the kids spent Thursday afternoon in the garden as well). The kids and K. tried to make a snowman, but the snow wasn't sticky enough. They got back home with red cheeks, all covered with snow and happy.

On Saturday morning, we ate a quick (yet big) breakfast, packed the car and an hour later we were on the ski slope. Yes, we went skiing. Even though we live on the coast, there are a few ski slopes in Kashubia region. They're far from big, but enough for us (and many others).

It was the first skiing adventure for Paulinka. And for me as well. Those who know me can assure you that it was huge. Artur didn't forget a thing (or forgot little, me being the one to judge) from his last year's skiing classes. After some time, me and Paulinka went to the bar for some hot chocolate/tea and fries, while the guys continued skiing for some time longer. Us, girls, loved the bar part of the day, too, might I add. It was a fun, yet very cold, half of day. We spent the rest of it at home.

Sunday was all about snow fun again. It was cold, but sunny this time. We went sledging, we were rolling in the snow. We definitely had fun.

The whole weekend was all about fun. Snow fun. Making memories. For me, snow fun is connected with hot chocoloate or hot cocoa once I get back home. And slices of bread baked with cheese. As simple as that. I want my kids to have memories with snow, too. They don't have to be the same as mine. As long as they are good. And hot chocolate/cocoa just has to be in the picture.

How was your winter weekend? Already waiting for the next one? We sure are. (My beloved camera is still dead. It's been too long. So all pictures were taken with mobiles. Which I hate).

Skiing in Kotlinka

We have spring in February. I'm scared to think what we'll have in April. Summer? Or maybe Winter, finally? I'm hoping for Spring/Summer because of our trip. Well, we'll see. After all we can do nothing about it, we have no influence on it.

On Friday evening, my father in law called us to say that he's planning to go skiing on Saturday and would like us to go with Artur. Actually, it was Artur he wanted to go with the most. We talked a lot about it as Krzysiek was too tired and didn't really feel like going and I had some work to do plus a baby that I'm still breast feeding. But after a loooooot of talking and thinking of various solutions to the big logistics and time management problem, we finally decided that I was going with Artur. Dad came to pick us up and off we drove.

It was a bit freaky to go skiing when everywhere around us we could see no snow and some flowers almost in full blossom. I had to remind myself a few times that the goal for the drive was the skiing experience. Not for me, though. I'm not skiing ;) Artur's learning and liking it a lot.

We decided to go to Kotlinka. Wieżyca Kotlinka or, as some also call it, Szymbark Kotlina. Cause in order to get there, you have to drive through Szymbark, not Wieżyca. And the main Wieżyca slope is in a bit different spot.

Anyhow, we made the turn in Szymbark near the road shrine and got onto a bumpy road. Yeah, that's the only way to get there. I looked out the window and all I could see were yellowish-greenish-brownish fields... No snow! What the hack?? Where are we and what are we doing here? We got out of the car, guys put their skiing shoes on and we went to the top of the slope. Cause that's the trick. The parking lot is on top of the slope. That's why we couldn't see it.

Artur had a lot of fun. He was learning to ski and he was doing quite well. For me. But I know nothing about it ;) It was horribly windy that day, so after some time I spent watching them, I decided to hide in the warm bar next to the slope. That gave me a chance to watch Zbigniew Brodka win a gold medal in the Olympics. And I was planning to read a guidebook (yes, I read guidebooks. I like being prepared, at least roughly, before going on a trip). Surely that couldn't happen with all the people cheering, screaming, laughing. Couldn't concentrate ;)

It was a great trip. And when I was looking at Artur learning to ski, I thought to myself "Maybe it's time for me, too" :)

No i główny stok Wieżycy jest w troszkę innym miejscu.

W mojej ocenie.

Sometimes Artur was running away from grandpa (and the first part of the slope is pretty steep) / Czasem Arturek próbował uciekać dziadkowi (a pierwsza część stoku jest stroma)
The warm-warm place where I spent my time reading/watching the Olympics / Cieplutkie cieplusieńkie miejsce, gdzie spędzałam czas czytając/oglądając olimpiadę

Short holidays in May

And, as I’ve already mentioned, we’re back from the usually long weekend, but his time all week holidays in May. It was great! The weather was wonderful. Hot, sunny, we couldn’t have imagined a better one.

We went to Kniewo in Kashuby. Actually, Kniewo is not an official name or anything. It’s just used to described a few houses situated by the Kniewo Lake. It lies 2-3 km from Szymbark. And it is a perfect place to rest and recharge batteries. In the middle of a forest with birds singing from early morning till late night. And the lake nearby... Swan (one that we saw the first day), seagulls… Peaceful. Romantic. Picturesque. And the butterflies flying all around us! So colourful, so pretty! Honestly, amazing!

The first afternoon that we spent there, apart from going for a walk by the lake, we went to a farmhouse nearby. My husband still remembers the taste of fresh cow milk that they were buying from that house and he wanted our son to get to know that taste as well. Unfortunately, they don’t have cows anymore. Haven’t had any for almost two years now. But, as they could still recognise and remember my husband, they took our child for a walk around the farmhouse (which we didn’t expect at all). Our boy was thrilled! He got a chance to see pigs (two or three different kinds), rabbits, hens and almost-a-week-old kittens that he had a chance to stroke. He was over the moon when he had a chance to look for eggs in a henhouse. It was so much fun to watch him do all that stuff. And then he saw a small playground… And everything else didn’t matter anymore. Yup, everything and everyone loses to a good playground. Or any playground, for that matter.

Oh, oh, and the second day, to keep Arturek occupied while we were waiting for our friends to come and stay with us for the next days, we came up with the idea of making a wooden box for forest treasures. We wanted to convince him to collect whatever he liked in the forest - stones, sticks, pine cones... It did work... Until he figured out that he can turn it into a kind of garage for his cars. Well, not what we anticipated, but whatever made him happy :)

We spent a lot of time outdoors. Well, most of it actually. When we weren’t asleep. Walking, running, playing, swimming in the lake (well, maybe swimming is too big a word for most of us, but we were paddling!). That is correct, no mistake. The beginning of May. And we were paddling in the lake! Our son being, well not the first, but the most eager one to do it! It was freakishly hot, especially for this time of year. Almost 30 C degrees. We enjoyed ourselves a lot. We spent there something like five days and we got home sooo rested.

I jezioro w okolicy... Łabędź (jeden, którego widzieliśmy pierwszego dnia), mewy... Spokojnie. Romantycznie. Malowniczo. I motyle latające dookoła nas! Takie kolorowe, takie ładne! Serio, niesamowite!

I wtedy zauważył malutki plac zabaw... I już nic więcej się nie liczyło. Tak, wszyscy i wszystko przegrywają w starciu z dobrym placem zabaw. Albo jakimkolwiek placem zabaw, w gruncie rzeczy.

Chcieliśmy go namówić, żeby zbierał w lesie cokolwiek mu się spodoba - kamyki, patyki, szyszki... i działało...

Prawie 30 stopni. Bardzo dobrze się bawiliśmy. Spędziliśmy tam jakieś pięć dni, a wróciliśmy do domu niesamowicie wypoczęci.
